Sustainability, as Kate Kallot frames it, must go beyond carbon footprints and climate goals to embrace social and economic inclusion. Q: You’ve just come off a discussion around AI and Big Data in sustainable development. What were the main highlights?
Kate Kallot: “When we think about sustainability, we shouldn’t just think about environment. We should also think about people, which means thinking about humanity as a whole. AI is a tool and an enabler to make both the people and the planet better.”
Q: How has your experience been at the event so far?
Kate Kallot: “The experience has been amazing. Having a mix of government officials and enterprises from across the region has been quite remarkable. There are so many similarities among developing and emerging economies, and so much to learn from Singapore and the region as a whole.”
Q: What specific challenges or opportunities in the Singapore tech landscape do you find most interesting?
Kate Kallot: “I’ve been spending a lot of time with government stakeholders. Singapore has a very well-established Gov-Tech system — many economic and policy decisions are powered by data and technology. Countries in the global south could take note of this model and use technology as an enabler for governance and decision-making.”
Q: Can you summarise your experience in one line?
Kate Kallot: “Opening eyes to the opportunities that global south countries can truly capture and leapfrog to.”
